Cancer Society Benefits From CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk for Cure!

St. Georges, Grenada, 5th February 2015. Throughout the course of 2014, CIBC FirstCaribbean engaged in several fund raising activities to promote awareness of cancer, a disease that affects the lives of many here at home in Grenada and across the globe.

In addition to a sensitization walk in July 2014, the bank also held a BBQ fund raiser and collected proceeds through a special account where staff, customers and other supporters could make donations to the cause.

To culminate the Bank’s campaign, on Saturday 18th October 2014, friends, family, sponsors, members of the Grenada Cancer Society and staff of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank, turned out in their numbers to demonstrate their determination to support individuals and families who are living with cancer.

This support effort took the form of a twilight walk, taking the participants from the Port Highway and ending at the Bank’s office in St. George’s. The walk culminated in a brief ceremony including a moving and memorable testimonial by Chalky Ventour, himself a cancer survivor, and multiple performances by local artistes.

On the morning of February 5th 2015, the Bank presented a cheque for $16,783.46 Eastern Caribbean Dollars to the Grenada Cancer Society, which reflected the efforts of the Bank, sponsors and the supporters, who gave their time and resources to this worthy cause. Also present were representatives from some of the fifteen businesses that provided additional support for the Walk through sponsorship and participation.

They included Grenada Electricity Services Ltd., Southern Electrical, SOL EC Ltd., National Lottery Authority, Sugar & Spice Investments, Modern Photo Studio, LIME, Deloit, Columbian Emeralds, Duty Free Caribbean, Grensure, Jonas Browne & Hubbard, Leslie’s Agency, Bryden & Minors Ltd., Poli Natural Spring Water and Ribena.

In making the contribution, Nigel Ollivierre, Country Manager of CIBC FirstCaribbean, reiterated the bank’s strong commitment to cancer research and awareness and also thanked supporters for the crucial role they played in making the walk and other activities a success.

“This is a cause that we all feel strongly about. A number of us have family and friends or know persons who have battled with cancer. CIBC FirstCaribbean continues to strengthen its efforts and this year we were able to raise double the amount compared to previous years,” he said.

“We have engaged the attention of a number of stakeholders and have grown the event by bringing together local cancer support services, corporate entities, and the public as leading participants. We thank you all for your support,” he added..

In only a few short months, CIBC FirstCaribbean will once again begin its regional awareness campaign. This year will mark the fifth consecutive year that CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank will be hosting its signature event, ‘Walk for the Cure’, which began as a tribute to the communities it serves.

They have whole heartedly embraced the cause and joined their parent company, CIBC, which is now in its 19th year of supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s Run for the Cure.

In 2014, Run for the Cure registered 127,000 participants and volunteers who came together on Run Day in Canada. Through the support of many generous donors they raised an astounding sum of over $25 million for innovative breast cancer research, health education and advocacy initiatives throughout Canada.

Speaking on the bank’s plans for this year’s walk, Mr. Ollivierre said “planning is already underway. The bank has agreed to host a number of activities including an awareness building walkathon, raffle, tea party and fashion show and our annual Saturday fundraising luncheon as well as a breakfast. Our target is to raise $25,000 as we anticipate 2015 will be the best year ever.”

Mr. Ollivierre encouraged the media, business associates and staff to continue their support for ‘Walk for Cure’ and the various fund raising activities to increase awareness of the disease, which can affect anyone at any time. The annual ‘Walk for Cure’ will be held once again in October 2015 and is open to public participation.
